Canaima

If the only Venezuela you know is the one on the news, then you only know it bleeding, a place where the politics are broken and the government fails its own people and now even the ground has come apart, so that from far enough away it can look like a country that has never been anything but a tragedy.

We know it the other way around, because we are from here, and we know its rivers and its mountains and the mornings that look like the first one the world ever woke up to, and we know a people who can lose everything and still get up the next day to build it back, none of which ever reaches the headlines, which is why we are showing it to you ourselves.

This film was shot and edited two years ago but never released, and we are putting it out today exactly as it was, without a single frame changed, because this is what Venezuela actually is once the cameras stop pointing at the wreckage.

About Hogar Bambi

Hogar Bambi began as a dream shared by its founder, Erica Spillman, and a father who was as moved as she was by the situation of children in Venezuela. It grew out of Erica's graduate thesis for her degree as an educator specializing in preschool. The first home, in Antímano, opened in 1996 under a management trust granted by the Instituto Nacional del Menor (INAM). Before long, Hogar Bambi took over its full operation, and a beautiful chain reaction began: the multiplication of the Casas Hogar in the San Bernardino neighborhood of Caracas.

As the number of children living at risk and in abandonment kept growing, the foundation expanded its care with the support of many allies, opening a network of homes across the San Bernardino parish of Caracas where children and adolescents live temporarily or until they come of age. These are not shelters anyone simply passes through. Hogar Bambi raises these children, feeds them, sends them to school, and stays with them until they can stand on their own.
